    The Master in Managerial Psychology course is a 12 unit post-graduate program being offered by CHARLESTON MANAGEMENT CENTRE The Master of Managerial Psychology course comprises subjects carefully chosen from a combination of management disciplines with emphasis in psychology subjects. To graduate, students enrolled are required to satisfactorily complete 12 compulsory study units in managerial and psychological issues. The course is designed to meet the needs of part-time students through weekday seminar sessions.

  • B. AIMS OF THE COURSE
  • The Master of Managerial Psychology course is aimed at providing versatile managers specializing in human behavior in the work place. These managers will be trained to appreciate and apply the advanced principles of individual, group and organizational behavior.

  • Objectives:
  • The rationale for the development of the Master of Managerial Psychology program is to prepare students for managerial work in the industry, governmental agencies, and universities. The uniqueness of the program comes from combining the core areas of management with areas of Applied Psychology, which will result in theoretical preparation with a practical orientation. Graduates will add value to any organization as they serve the needs of the market that would not be met by graduates with a pure Management background or a pure psychology background. This is because the addition of the psychological perspective enhances the management of human relations and organizational effectiveness.

    able to utilize methods of measuring and evaluating individuals based on appraisals geared toward improving performance.

    able to understand consumer preferences, attitudes, and buying habits and patterns.

    Ethical, Legal and Professional Contexts such as negotiated labor contracts, and issues related to human subjects and organizational participants, and the fair and equitable treatment of workers, and issues incorporate social responsibility.

Industrial and Labor Relations: are familiar with major labor related legislation and contractual obligations that affect human resource policy implementation. Graduates will also be familiar with resolving conflicts in a labor/management relation s environment.

  • Degree in psychology or in any related field from a recognized university or professional qualifications in any field from a recognized examining body with minimum 3 years working experience.   • 3. Pre-requisites / Number of Modules
  • Students who do not have a prior degree in psychology will be required to complete the 1 pre-requisite subject before starting the Masters program. The total number of modules for the Masters program is 12. The pre-requisite subject: General Psychology
  • D. COURSE ASSESSMENT
  • 1. Course assessment
  • Various assessment items may be used at the discretion of the subject facilitators. These may include individual or group assignments, project writing, tests, class discussion and class participation. The weightage of each assessment item is based on the following percentage:

  • Examination 60%
  • Course Work 40%
  • Total 100%
  • Grading scale:
  • High Distinction (HD) 85 - 100 marks
  • Distinction (DI) 75 - 84 marks
  • Credit (CR) 65 - 74 marks
  • Pass (PS) 50 - 64 marks
  • Fail (FL) 0 - 49 marks
  • 2. Course Duration
  • Normally 18 months on a modular basis. Each subject will have a minimum of 44 contact hours comprising:

    • F. SUBJECT SYPNOSIS
    • MGP601 PROJECT PAPER

    This subject basically allows students to conduct workplace research in their chosen area of interest. Both qualitative and quantitative orientations to research are encouraged. Under the guidance of experienced faculty staff, students are to conduct research in any area of managerial psychology. Methods could vary from case study to experimentation, quasi- experimentation, and correlation work.

    • MGP602 PRACTICUM IN MANAGERIAL PSYCHOLOGY

    This is a capstone course in managerial psychology that uses practicalisation to provide acquaintance with theory, research and applications of managerial psychology. Students will learn and praticalice managerial functions in areas like people management, performance management, organizational culture and commitment, expatriation and disengagement from organizational life. This subject emphasizes the skills that are needed in the work place.

  • MGP603 PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
  • The course sets out to discuss the major issues that managerial psychologists would face in their line of work. Different areas of organizational psychology making will be discussed and relevant professional codes of conduct will be reviewed in order to develop best practices.

  • MGP604 CONSUMER AND ADVERTISING PSYCHOLOGY
  • An understanding of how consumers and organizations reach buying decisions is crucial for any company. This explains to some extent the influences and the rationale behind certain purchasing behaviors. This course is an overview and survey of findings on consumer and advertising psychology and their applications. It aims to provide students with an understanding of consumer psychology from the marketing, advertising, and personal perspectives. It is also designed to provide a working knowledge of the terminologies and concepts of consumer research and of advertising research. Lastly, the course looks into the issues involved in the commercial application of consumer research and knowledge of buying decisions

    • MGP605 TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT IN MANAGERIAL PSYCHOLOGY

      This course examines the nature of adult learning, training, and development in a business environment. It focuses on the traditional components of effective training and development as well as the broadening role of training and development. The course prepares students to make effective training and development decisions within their organizations and learn to plan and deliver training and career management for themselves and others.

    • MGP606 TESTING AND MEASUREMNTS IN MANAGERIAL PSYCHOLOGY
    • This is a practical course in testing and assessment. It introduces the student to the fundamentals of test development as well as the different categories of tests and assessments such as tests for general intellectual ability, tests of separate abilities, and personality tests. Students will have practical experiences taking some of these tests as well as writing up reports and critiques of these tests. They will also be exposed to the ethical principles involved in the use of tests.

    • MGP607 ETHICS AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION
    • This course is an innovative mix of ethics and conflict resolution. Ethics is a driver of superior corporate performance. This course focuses on the development of ethical decision-making at the managerial level with an emphasis on improving ethical standards in business organization, communities, government, and international trade. It exposes the student to issues, rights and interests of stakeholders, employees, customers, suppliers, and government. Conflict however, is ubiquitous to our lives including the business, personal and public environments. Skill of mediation, negotiation and advocacy are taught with an emphasis on the business world.

    • MGP608 PSYCHOLOGY OF PEAK PERFORMANCE
    • This course explores the psychological features of peak performers from different perspectives. It will give students an in-depth understanding of factors that determine human performance as well the methods of improving human performance at an individual and group level.

    • MGP609 PSYCHOLOGY OF CONSULTING AND PRACTICE
    • This course is a learning event for those ready to acquire the consulting mindset so critical in today's business climate. Students are immediately engaged in a learning experience that models the very analyses of techniques it presents. Workplace examples and collaborative case studies pull students into active problem solving, as they learn the foundations of performance improvement. The program demonstrates proven tools and techniques in use in the consulting world today.

    • MGP611 PSYCHOLOGY OF LEADING, COACHING AND MENTORING
    • This subject identifies in detail, the theoretical underpinnings, the leadership knowledge, skills, attitudes and other characteristics that are essential to integrate followers and their leaders in fruitful relationships. It is not enough to motivate and inspire subordinates. Leaders who are relevant in today's competitive environment need to learn to mentor and be mentored, coach and be coached, and generally strive to be the best that they can be.

    • MGP612 CROSS-CULTURAL MANAGERIAL PSYCHOLOGY
    • The subject focuses on the effects of culture on the nature and behavior of individuals, their adaptations to institutions and environments, and their relations with others within and outside their culture.

    • MGP613 PSYCHOLOGY OF ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENT
    • This module examines the theories, methods and findings relevant to changing individuals and groups in the organizational context, and the organizations themselves in order to improve effectiveness. Individual change strategies, interpersonal and group change strategies are some of the major topics covered. The key skills needed to analyze the need for change, lead and implement change, and maintain the change effort are taught and modeled.

    • MGP614 ENTREPRENEURSHIP
    • The importance of entrepreneurial organizations as the driving force of industrialization around the world cannot be denied. This module considers the issues involved in the creation of entrepreneurial organizations, the nature of entrepreneurship, and its development. The factors necessary for venture success and the preparation of entrepreneurs for success are important components of the module. Students will be trained to write bankable feasibility reports that will define the concept, provide relevant industry data, describe the company's products or services, and discuss the competitive analysis and market strategy. Other important information will include data on operations of the business, and rudimentary pro-forma financial projections.

    • MGP615 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND HUMAN FACTORS PSYCHOLOGY

    This course explores the major issues in occupational health and ergonomics that relate to psychology. It will examine pertinent work place issues like stress, fatigue and burnout, giving the student the skills needed to identify and respond to these issues at a corporate level.
